Euthanasia

for Dogs and Cats at Small Friends Veterinary Hospital

Making the decision to say goodbye to a beloved pet is never easy. Many owners delay it as long as possible, but very old age, severe illness, or other circumstances may mean it is time to put your small friend to sleep. These decisions are often complex and are best made in consultation with your vet. This page explains the process of euthanasia and what to expect.

Veterinarian providing compassionate pet euthanasia at Small Friends Veterinary Hospital

Euthanasia is the term used by vets to describe the process of humanely ending an animal’s life when they are too ill or old to enjoy a satisfactory quality of life.

When you arrive at Small Friends Veterinary Hospital, Dr Matt or one of our other vets will ask you to sign a consent form giving permission for your small friend to be put to sleep.

Once you are ready, a nurse will gently hold your pet while a patch of hair is shaved from their leg and a painless injection is given into the vein. Your small friend will lose consciousness, and shortly afterward, their heartbeat and breathing will stop.

It is normal for pets to gasp or release their bladder or bowels during this process. The entire procedure usually takes just a few minutes.

If your small friend is anxious or aggressive, a sedative may be given beforehand. In some cases, such as when a pet is very ill, the injection may be administered into the belly rather than a vein.

Whether to be present during euthanasia is a deeply personal decision. Consider this beforehand and choose what feels right for you. You may come alone or bring family members. The number of people present is entirely up to you.

Our team can help arrange either a group burial or cremation, with ashes returned to you if desired. Thinking about this in advance often makes the process easier.

If you have any questions at the time of euthanasia, our staff are here to support you.
